Background

BIOFIN is a UNDP managed global collaborative partnership to develop and implement an evidence based methodology that improves biodiversity outcomes using finance and economics.

BIOFIN was developed in response to the 10th Conference of the Parties (COP-10) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) which identified the need for better information on current expenditure and financing needs and for the formation of a comprehensive methodology that helps countries develop resource mobilisation strategies and solutions.

Supporting the ambitious the CBD’s Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, BIOFIN responds directly to Aichi Target 20 on Resource Mobilisation and supports the other 19 targets to facilitate the delivery of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP's).

Currently 30 countries participate in BIOFIN. The project was launched at the COP 11 in India in 2012, and phase 1 continues through 2018. BIOFIN is coordinated by UNDP through a global team supporting country implementation and the evolution and improvement of the BIOFIN methodology. The global team works with interdisciplinary national teams customising the methodology to the national context in each country.

BIOFIN, together with the CBD launched the Regional Nodes which supports non-core BIOFIN countries with targeted support or adoption of part of the BIOFIN process.
